Katia Bianchini worked as a researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Religious and Ethnic Diversity. Her research focussed on statelessness, the problem of resolving nationality status and granting protection.

She earned her doctorate from the University of York, where she focused on a socio-legal study of the implementation of the Convention relating to the status of stateless persons in 10 EU States. She holds an LL.M from the University of San Diego, California, and a Laurea in Giurisprudenza from the University of Pavia, Italy.

Before engaging in research, she worked as a civil rights and immigration lawyer in the USA and the UK for about 10 years.
