Farhan Samanani joined the Department for Socio-Cultural Diversity in October 2018. His research focuses on political cooperation and division across lines of difference, in the UK.  At a time where political, social and cultural divides are the frequent topic of commentary, news and debate, Farhan’s work takes a bottom-up perspective and traces how division or unity emerge within people’s own lives, and how these everyday arrangements endure or collapse across time and space. To trace this, Farhan looks at how different understandings of diversity emerge within various grassroots organizations, and how these understandings are shared or undermined when these groups engage with funders, lobbyists, politicians and other political partners.

Farhan completed his PhD in Social Anthropology at the University of Cambridge, as a Gates Cambridge Scholar, and was awarded his degree in May 2017. Before arriving at the MPI, he worked as a post-doctoral research in Human Geography at the University of Oxford. As a researcher, Farhan is passionate about bridging the gap between research and practice, and has worked with a range of groups, from the World Bank to community theatre organizations, drawing on his research to help produce change beyond the academy.
