Susanne Becker is a postdoctoral researcher at the Department for Sociocultural Diversity. She holds a degree (Diplom) in sociology from Ludwig-Maximilians University (LMU) in Munich/Germany and a Ph.D. in Sociology from Goethe-University Frankfurt/Germany. Currently she researches the diversity of asylum-seekers’ needs and aspirations in Germany. She focuses on the question of linguistic diversity and needs of asylum-seekers as well as on the intersection of language, asylum and social inequalities.

In her Ph.D. she researched in an ethnographic study the interconnection of language and social inequalities. Therefore she examined how language ideologies (believes about language(s) and ways of speaking) are linked to economic inequalities. While perusing her Ph.D. she was a visiting researcher at the University of Capetown (South Africa) and at the University of Birmingham (UK) as well as research fellow at the Department for Qualitative Research Methods (Prof. Hella von Unger) at Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich (Germany). Her research focuses on transnational migration, (global) social inequalities, language, asylum, postcolonialism, multilingualism and translanguaging.
