Susanne Becker is a postdoctoral researcher in the Department for Socio-cultural Diversity. She holds a degree (Diplom) in Sociology from Ludwig-Maximilians University (LMU) in Munich/Germany and a PhD in Sociology from Goethe-University Frankfurt/Germany. Currently she is researching the diversity of asylum-seekers’ needs and aspirations in Germany. She focuses on the issues of linguistic diversity and the needs of asylum-seekers, as well as on the intersection of language, asylum and social inequalities.

In her PhD she embarked on an ethnographic study focusing on the interconnections of language and social inequalities. She therefore examined how language ideologies (believes about language(s) and ways of speaking) are linked to economic inequalities. While perusing her PhD she was a visiting researcher at the University of Capetown (South Africa) and the University of Birmingham (UK) as well as a research fellow at the Department for Qualitative Research Methods (Prof. Hella von Unger) at Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich (Germany). Her research focuses on transnational migration, (global) social inequalities, language, asylum, postcolonialism, multilingualism and translanguaging.
