Gabriele Alex

Gabriele Alex is currently Professor at the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology, Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen and also senior research partner at the Max Planck Institute (MPI) for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity, Goettingen, Germany.

She studies medical diversity and health seeking behaviour among various low status groups in South India. Regarding medical diversity she is interested in the ways medical traditions and knowledge operate within and in dialogue with other ideological and religious systems, and how healing properties are linked to, for example, ethnic or religious qualities, from which they gain their power and knowledge. Her research interests include medical anthropology, ethnicity, healing and identity, death and rites of passage, the Tamil diaspora and the anthropology of youth and childhood. She has published various books, articles and book-chapters on these topics (see http://www.uni-tuebingen.de/fakultaeten/philosophische-fakultaet/fachbereiche/aoi/ethnologie/abteilung/mitarbeiterinnen/prof-dr-gabriele-alex.html).
