The Historical Observatory (Göttinger Sternwarte) is a notable astronomical observatory that was established in 1816 at the University of Göttingen. Under the direction of Carl Friedrich Gauss, who served as its first director, it became one of Europe's leading astronomical research centers in the 19th century. The observatory building was designed by Georg Heinrich Borheck and is notable for its neoclassical architecture. It was equipped with cutting-edge instruments for its time, and was the site of significant astronomical discoveries and mathematical developments. Today, the representative building of the university is no longer used for astronomical observations. It serves as a workplace and conference center and is open to the public during events and exhibitions. We will be offering an optional tour of the building after the Festschrift event on June 20, 2025, for interested participants.
