DESCRIPTION:The Tokyo 2020 Olympics has taken “Unity and Diversity” as
one of its main mottos - this\, in times of global migration-led diversifi
cation of societies\, also called superdiversity by Vertovec. Recent migra
tion policy changes and rising social movements in diversity issues seem t
o showcase Japan as an open and cosmopolitan country for diversity. Indeed
\, while the intentions for hosting such mega-events have often given prio
rity to the economic effects\, expectations have recently risen to also le
ave social and cultural legacies behind. However\, besides the motto of
“Unity in Diversity” as a rather ubiquitous feature of the Olympics\,
not much appears to have changed - at least politically - beyond marketing
and urban re-development. Based on recent developments of policy and publ
ic debates regarding diversity issues in Japan\, this paper examines the m
easures (not) taken by governmental actors\, but also explores how the LGB
T* community and activists seized the opportunity provided by the Olympics
and the global media attention to initiate a momentum for a social change
in the local society. Reflecting on the different dimensions of diversity
from a transnationalism and superdiversity perspective\, I argue how the
Olympics might have contributed sustainably to the new awareness for the f
actual societal diversification in Japan.\nSpeaker: Sakura Yamamura (MPI-M

DESCRIPTION:This talk concerns living experiences of ageing\, transnational
family care\, and border regimes in the context of displacement. Drawing
from multi-sited ethnographic research among the East Timorese\, I discuss
how older adults cope with family separation and life in exile\, their as
pirations\, when and how transnational care becomes ‘on hold’\, and ho
w they deal with the impossibility of meeting intergenerational and cultur
al obligations. The talk examines care through the lens of ‘circulation
’ and attends to the asymmetries entailed in intergenerational relations
hips and border regimes in the waysthey shape (and are shaped by) transnat
ional care exchanges. In the context of ‘ageing in exile’\, it is esse
ntial to understand older people’s narratives as they are linked with th
e ambivalences of other family members across generations. Forms of immobi
lity withholding or limiting care can transcend physical borders\, includi
ng the social and emotional boundaries conflict-divided communities build
against one another over time. These imaginary borders require us to think
about how precarious familial relations affect understandings of transnat
ional care amid enduring legacies of violence.

DESCRIPTION:Disputes over rituals have given rise to major revolutionary mo
vements in human history. This is true for the Protestant Revolution of 16
th century Europe\, perhaps the most important revolution in th
e making of the modern world\, but also for the failed Mutiny and Taiping
risings of 19th century in India and China\, as well as for the
various atheistic Communist revolutions in Asia. These disputes over ritu
als are often interpreted as “sideshows” of the <em>real</em> politica
l struggles or as “the hidden registers of resistance”\, but in fact\,
  they are <em>really </em>about the efficacy\, rationality\, or “sinceri
ty” of certain rituals. Such controversies have immense impact on the va
lues and political orientations of people\, as is shown by the rise of veg
etarianism and non-violent politics in India. In China and Vietnam\, the a
nti-superstition and anti-cult aspects of repressive authoritarianism have
had huge consequences. The repression of certain rituals does not result
in the abolition of all ritual. In fact\, Protestantism and Communism have
come up with their own rituals. This talk will discuss the dynamic of rit
ual and anti-ritual from an anthropological viewpoint in general\, theoret
ical terms\, but will take its examples from India\, China\, and Vietnam.\

DESCRIPTION:Since the 1970s\, a significant number of migrant domestic work
ers from the Asian region (primarily from the Philippines\, Indonesia\, In
dia\, and Sri Lanka) have worked to sustain households in cities such as S
ingapore and Hong Kong. Amidst public debate about the ever-increasing nee
d for migrant domestic workers to assist with eldercare in Asia\, we hear
little about their own futures. Based on ethnographic research\, this talk
traces the journeys of an older generation of migrant domestic workers wh
o have spent much of their working lives abroad on temporary contracts. Gi
ven the restrictive long-term residence policies in the places in which th
ey work\, migrant domestic workers must return to their countries of origi
n upon retirement. The talk focuses on the ‘ends’ of transnational car
e\, considering both the individual\, collective and familial life project
s and aspirations that long-term domestic workers have sought to cultivate
in their years of work abroad\; as well as the new aspirations that agein
g domestic workers develop as they imagine their futures towards the end o
f their transnational working lives. I argue that the aspirations of migra
nt women\, while initially stated in linear terms\, rarely settle\; rather
\, they take on novel and ambivalent forms that are often temporally at od
ds with the restrictive migration regimes which shape their transnational
 care trajectories.

DESCRIPTION:How do the empires of the past continue to exist today? And wha
t is forgotten when bygone empires are so adamantly remembered? For the pa
st five-and-a-half years\, the Max Planck Research Group\,“Empires of Me
mory: The Cultural Politics of Historicity in Former Habsburg and Ottoman
Cities\,” has investigated these questions by examining the cities of ce
ntral Europe\, the Balkans\, Anatolia\, and beyond. The “In Dialogue”
event “Sanitizing Imperial Pasts” will present selected results from t
his research in order to explore how bygone empires continue to shape our
world today. The discussion is moderated by <i>Jelena Radovanović</i>\, a
researcher of the Max Planck Research Group “Empires of Memory“.

DESCRIPTION:The COVID-19 pandemic has clearly dominated public debate for 2
years\, but it is now timely and important to think about continuities an
d change in a migration world. This means a world that has been\, is and w
ill continue to be powerfully shaped by international migration in its var
ious forms and by responses to that migration. The pandemic has had massiv
e effects\, but we do not privilege it as the sole cause or driver of the
dynamics of contemporary international migration. The aims of the conferen
ce are to understand more about: (1) new patterns and trends in migration
and mobility and to examine the factors that shape them\, including\, but
not confined to the pandemic\; and (2)\, understanding more about the fact
ors that shape social\, legal\, political and economic responses to intern
ational migration in its various forms.

DESCRIPTION:In a global context of population ageing\, migration and forced
displacement\, questions of transnational and translocal social protectio
n remain paramount. Migrants and refugees at different stages of the life
course seek social protection through a variety of channels: from formal s
tate-based pension and social security schemes\; cash transfers and humani
tarian initiatives\; to informal forms of social protection through kinshi
 p\, religious networks\, neighbourhood support groups\, co-operatives and
civil society organizations. Cutting across these different spaces are fin
ancial institutions and markets in promoting ideas and products around ind
ividualized future security. Piecing together these different forms of soc
ial protection is far from seamless and there are numerous inequalities th
at migrants and refugees confront in securing social protection and wellbe
ing\, where some are eligible for formal support and others are excluded.

DESCRIPTION:Political analysts have long used spatial representa tions as a
substrate for behavioral models\, especially for legislators’ voting ch
oices. Most commonly\, we think in terms of a single-dimension continuum o
f ide ology running from left to right. However\, there are two weaknesses
of such an approach for the study of elite political behavior. First\, in
a number of par liaments\, the underlying space appears to be at least tw
 o dimensional\; second\, there are good reasons why\, in many instances\,
political action cannot be under stood as a direct expression of preferenc
es\, but has to be understood in terms of a more complex strate gic orient
ation. While many political analysts work on generalizing core behavioral
models\, we here instead consider three different modes by which partisans
can indicate their positions—the speeches they give\, the votes they ca
st\, and the way they interact with one another. We examine the Weimar Rei
chstag\, a parlia ment in which there were not only two interpretable dime
nsions\, but a shift in importance from one dimen sion to another. We show
that this shift was presaged by interaction patterns\, and that close att
ention to the interactions of parliamentarians may offer a new win dow int
o elite political behavior.\nSpeaker: John Levi Martin (University of Chic

DESCRIPTION:Welche Dynamiken prägen die deutsche Klassengesellschaft der G
egenwart?
Thompson’s „Making of the English Working C
