Naluwembe Binaisa is now at the UCL (University College London).

Naluwembe Binaisa was a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Socio-Cultural Diversity. Her research project, based in Lagos, Nigeria explores the relationship between super-diversity, urbanization and mobile communication technologies and the intersections with mobility, boundaries, identity, gender and generation dynamics. The project was designed to advance theoretical and empirical understandings of how social, political and economic spaces are being disrupted, re-formed, re-inscribed and networked in this mega-city. Its scope ranged from micro-geographies to wider national, regional and transnational spaces through the use and appropriation of mobile communication technologies.

Before joining Max Planck Naluwembe was based at the International Migration Institute, University of Oxford working on two projects: Mobility in the African Great Lakes and African Diasporas within Africa, part of the Oxford Diasporas Programme. Naluwembe has fieldwork experience in Uganda, Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya and Nigeria. She was previously based at the Sussex Center for Migration Research, University of Sussex and worked on several multi-disciplinary collaborative research projects focusing on Africa<>Europe including MAFE (Migration from Africa to Europe) and for the gender, age and generations research cluster of IMISCOE (International Migration, Integration and Social Cohesion in Europe).

Naluwembe holds a PhD in Migration Studies from the University of Sussex where she also gained an MSc in Social Research Methods and an MA in Migration Studies. Naluwembe’s research interests include African mobility, Diasporas, development, postcolonialism and mobile communication technologies. She is a long-standing member of the IMISCOE research group on ICTs and migration.
