Nuno Oliveira holds a PhD in Sociology from ISCTE Lisbon University Institute, a graduate degree in Data Analysis also by ISCTE-IUL, and a Master in Historical and Economic Sociology in the Universidade Nova de Lisboa - FCSH, with a thesis on political languages on the integration of immigrants. He has developed work at the intersection of integration policies, political discourse about immigrants and institutional repertoires for the accommodation of cultural and racial diversity, either at a national level and at a comparative level with a specific focus on Brazil; research that he has of lately directed towards urban sociology and globalization.
As a post-doctoral fellow of the Max-Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity, he was working on the project Multiculturalism regained: Comparative Perspectives on Diversity Governance in Europe and Latin America. He is also a post-doctoral fellow at CIES (ISCTE-IUL) where he is developing work on the meaning of intercultural models, the political and theoretical transition from multiculturalism towards interculturalism, with a particular focus on an in-depth understanding of the Portuguese model. Among other recent projects, he was a senior researcher at the Conviviality and Superdiversity project in CIES, and is the responsible at the CIES for the project GOVDIV (Multilevel governance of cultural diversity in Europe and Latin America) funded by IRSE of the EU Commission, both projects coordinated by Beatriz Padilla. He was engaged in the Operation Vote project carried out by Numena as head researcher.
He worked as Detached National Expert for the Unit Research and Data Collection of the current Fundamental Rights Agency (previously European Monitoring Centre on Racism and Xenophobia) of the EU, based in Vienna, Austria. Before, he was the coordinator of the Raxen network’s Portuguese National Focal Point for the European Monitoring Centre on Racism and Xenophobia. He was responsible for designing and setting up the site of the Portuguese Immigration Observatory running under the auspices of the High-commissioner for Migrations.
