Dr. Maximilian Scholz

Maximilian Scholz is an Assistant Professor of History and Religion at Florida State University. He holds a Ph.D. in history from Yale University. His dissertation, funded by a Fulbright Grant, examined the impact of Reformation refugees in Frankfurt am Main and found, among other things, that the presence of refugees established and hardened confessional boundaries between Lutherans and Calvinists. His published work can be found in the Journal of Urban History and the Sixteenth Century Journal.

Dr. Scholz had the privilege (and delight!) of spending his first year after graduate school as a postdoctoral fellow at the Max Planck Institute (MMG) in Goettingen. He is thrilled to be rejoining the Institute as a guest of the Ethics, Law and Politics Department. His current historical research investigates the role played by refugees in the construction of early modern notions of citizenship, especially in Brandenburg-Prussia, Hessen-Kassel, and Saxony.
