Dr. Claire de Galembert

Curriculum Vitae

Claire de Galembert is a sociologist at the CNRS (National Center of Scientific Research) in Paris and visitor at the Max Planck Fellow Group “Governance of Cultural Diversity – Socio-Legal Dynamics”

Her research addresses the relation between religion and politics with a specific focus on the way public authorities in France (central and local administrations) are dealing with Islam and Muslims.  She is the author of various articles on managing Islam in French cities and on controversies over Islamic veils, which have appeared in the Annales de la recherche, Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies, and other academic journals. She has also been in charge of an important survey commissioned by the Penitentiary Administration and the Minister of Justice about religion in French prisons.

Her research is very much focused on the legal dimension of the public regulation of religion, implying not only the way social and political stakeholders refer to law and use courts, but also the way they take part in the legislative process. During her stay in Göttingen, she cooperated with Matthias Koenig on research addressing the role of the courts in the public regulation of religious diversity and, more specifically, the role of the European Court of Human rights in changing the public management of religions.
