Prof. Dr. Sophie Watson

Curriculum Vitae

Sophie Watson is Professor of Sociology at Open University (UK). Previously she was Co-Director of the ESRC Centre for Research into Socio-Cultural Change. Sophie holds professorships at the University of East London, the University of Bristol and the University of Sydney. Her recent consultancies and activities in policy development include, among others, Newcastle University, Thames Water and the Vienna Science and Technology Fund (WWTF).

Her current research focuses on City water: Water lies at the very heart of the interconnectedness and entanglements of humans with their environment and reveals, arguably more than any other substance, the impossibility of thinking of ourselves as separate from nature. Water exists as a resource through a complex intersection of socio- technical networks and systems and is a site of different cultural meanings and social practices across time and space. The research project seeks to explore cities and water through the socio-cultural practices associated with it, the socio- technical networks involved, and the regulatory frameworks of its provision across a number of cities in the Global North and South.

Other projects focus on Everyday life and the Digital Society, Street markets as Transcultural/Transnational Spaces and Difference in the city and Gender and the ‘multicultural’ in everyday spaces. At MPI-MMG Sophie Watson is working on "Spatial Justice in the City".
