Prof. Dr. Bob W. White

Curriculum Vitae

Bob W. White is Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Montreal and director of the Laboratory for Research on Intercultural Relations (LABRRI). His early research was focused on popular culture, cultural policy, and globalization, especially in French-speaking Africa but over the last decade, his research has been focused on intercultural policy and practice in cities. His most recent project involves an in-depth ethnographic study of intercultural dynamics in Montreal, with a special focus on the notion of urban citizenship and how civic-based models can be used to counter social and economic exclusion. Together with Lomomba Emongo he published L’interculturel au Québec: rencontres historiques et enjeux politiques (PUM, 2014) and his most recent book is entitled Intercultural Cities: Policy and Practice for a New Era (Palgrave, 2017). During his stay at the Max Planck Institute, he will be building from his work on intercultural cities to look at what he refers to as “city-based inclusion networks” as well as ongoing research on the study of everyday forms of cohabitation in cities. He recently organized an international workshop on this topic and was pleased to have Prof. Steve Vertovec as a keynote speaker for the program.
