Tam Ngo erforscht unter Anwendung von anthropologischen Methoden und Diskursanalyse den religiösen Wandel, Dialoge zwischen Spiritualismus und Wissenschaft und Erinnerungspolitik im spätsozialistischen Vietnam und China der Nachkriegszeit. Ein Podcast über ihr erstes Buch, "The New Way: Protestantism and the Hmong in Vietnam" (Seattle, 2016) kann über diesen Link abgerufen werden.
Eine Rezension kann hier gelesen werden. Derzeit schreibt sie an ihrer zweiten Monografie mit dem vorläufigen Titel " The Unclaimed War: The 1979 Sino-Vietnamese Border War. Memory politics in Vietnam and China”. Sie erhielt ein Senior VIDI Stipendium (2020-2024) von der Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research für ein Forschungsprojekt über den Einsatz von Spiritual- und DNA-Forensik zum Auffinden und Identifizieren von Kriegstoten in Vietnam und dessen Auswirkungen auf die Versöhnungspolitik des Landes. In ihrem Projekt sind ein Postdoktorand und zwei Doktoranden beschäftigt. Neben ihrer Beschäftigung am MPI MMG arbeitet Tam halbtags am Netherlands Institute for War Documentation (NIOD) in Amsterdam.
