Dr. Tilmann Heil (Koeln University)

Curriculum Vitae

Tilmann Heil, trained in social and cultural anthropology and interdisciplinary migration studies, was working at the Interculturalism, Migration and Minorities Research Centre (IMMRC), KU Leuven. Since 2017, he was an INCOMING [PEGASUS]² Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellow at KU Leuven, affiliated to the National Museum (PPGAS) of the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro and a research partner of the MPI-MMG. Since 2013, he was a postdoctoral research fellow at the Centre of Excellence "Cultural Foundations of Social Integration" at University of Konstanz, Germany. During his doctoral training from 2009-2013 at the University of Oxford, he also held a Doctoral Research Fellowship at the Max Planck Institute and was affiliated with the Oxford Diaspora Programme (International Migration Institute), the African Studies Centre and COMPAS (Centre on Migration, Policy and Society).

He is doing research on urban hierarchies and inequalities based on ethnographic research with West African and Southern European migrants in Rio de Janeiro. Furthermore, he collaborates with Meron Zeleke on gendered transit migration between Ethiopia and Djibouti. Since his doctoral work at the Max Planck Institute, he continues to shape the notion of conviviality as a process of interaction, negotiation and translation from which forms of minimal and fragile sociality emerge.
