Dr. Jifeng Liu (Xiamen University)

Curriculum Vitae

Jifeng Liu is Assistant Professor of the sociology of Southeast Asia at Xiamen University, China. He received his Ph.D. in sociology and religious studies from Leiden University. As a sociologist, his research revolves around the interplay of ethnicity, religion, and politics with a geographic focus on Southeast Asia and China. He was working on his book manuscript titled Retrieving the Past Glory: Social Memory, Transnational Networks and Christianity in Contemporary China.

He was previous Research Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity where his research explores how the rise of China is restructuring the Protestant networks between Chinese communities in Southeast Asia and Southern Fujian in the twenty-first century, as part of the Indian and Chinese Religious Networks in South-East Asia project directed by Prof. Peter van der Veer and Prof. Kenneth Dean.

As a research partner, he is currently working in collaboration with the MPI’s Department of Religious Diversity on transnational religious networks between China and Southeast Asia.
