Kim Wale (Stellenbosch University)

Curriculum Vitae

Kim Wale holds a Masters Degree (with distinctions) from the University of Cape Town, with a Masters thesis on the constructions of racism and resistance in the life histories of ex-combatants who fought against the apartheid government from within South African borders during the 1980s and 1990s period of internal revolt. She plans to begin PhD study on the bio-politics of ex-combatant re-integration in South Africa at the School of Oriental and African Studies (University of London) in September 2010.

Since completing her Masters degree in 2008 she has been working as a researcher for the Centre for Sociological Research at the University of Johannesburg. She has been involved in research on class in Soweto and has been co-authoring a book on the subject with Professor Peter Alexander, Claire Ceruti and Mosa Phadi. In addition, she is co-editing a special edition on Class in the South for the South African Review of Sociology with Professor Peter Alexander and Professor Satish Deshpande.

Kim is presently involved in conducting research on students’ experiences and perceptions of societal policing of inter-racial relationships in South Africa. In particular she is interested in understanding what forms of societal policing of inter-racial boundaries continue to exist in post-apartheid South Africa and whether new forms of intra-racial diversities (super-diversities) play a role in challenging the salience of racial boundaries.

She was working in conjunction with Steve Vertovec on South African Diversities.
