Dora Sampaio holds a PhD in Human Geography from the University of Sussex, where she looked at the diversity of ageing migrants on the Portuguese islands of the Azores, exploring migrants’ transnational experiences of ageing, home, care, and belonging. Dora’s research interests lie at the intersection of ageing and migration, with a particular focus on the social and spatial dimensions of the ageing –migration nexus, transnational mobilities, cultures of ageing, and the challenges of home-making and ageing care in a mobile world. Prior to this, she was a researcher in migration studies at the Centre for Geographical Studies of the University of Lisbon. She has published her work in Area, Finisterra – the Portuguese Journal of Geography, and Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies. She has co-edited a special section of Area on ‘geographies of ageing–migration nexus’ together with Russell King and Katie Walsh.

She joined the ‘Ageing in a Time of Mobility’ Research Group, led by Dr. Megha Amrith, in June 2018. In her project, she looks at the ‘(Im)mobilities of transnational ageing care and family re-negotiations across borders’ with a focus on Brazilian ageing parents and their migrant offspring in North America and Europe.
