Dr. Kathryn Pillay

Vita

Kathryn Pillay is a guest in 2024. She is a Senior Lecturer in Sociology at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), South Africa. Kathryn is a National Research Foundation (NRF) rated researcher whose areas of teaching and research include that of ‘race’, migration, identity and belonging. She holds an honours degree in Industrial Psychology, a Masters in Industrial, Organisational and Labour Studies, and a PhD in Sociology from UKZN.  

In addition to her academic publications, Dr. Pillay is also co-author of a children's book based on her research, titled ‘How to stop a train: The story of how Mohandas Gandhi became the Mahatma’ (Pan Macmillan, 2024) which addresses issues of social justice and inequality. Her book exemplifies her commitment to exploring complex social justice themes in accessible and engaging ways, fostering broader conversations on pressing societal issues.
