Prof. Dr. Madhumita Sengupta

Madhumita Sengupta was born in Guwahati, Assam and completed the early part of her education in Guwahati before moving to Presidency College, Kolkata for a B. A. degree in History. She did an M.A. in Modern History from Jawaharlal Nehru University Delhi and a PhD in History from the University of Calcutta. She was Ford Post-doctoral Fellow at the Centre for Studies in Social Sciences Calcutta (CSSSC) for fifteen months from January 2010 to March 2011. She has taught for more than ten years in Rani Birla Girls’ College, Kolkata. She was selected as Assistant Professor in the Dept. of History, Jadavpur University in 2013 but opted instead to join the discipline of Humanities and Social Sciences at the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar, Gujarat in 2014. She is currently Assistant Professor (History) in Humanities & Social Sciences at IIT Gandhinagar. Her broad areas of research interest include British colonial history with special focus on the history of British Assam in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the social and cultural impact of colonial rule, linguistic and regional identities in colonial India and related themes. She has published research articles on colonial language policies and the educational policies of the British in Assam. Her book, Becoming Assamese: Colonialism and New Subjectivities in Northeast India, is being published by Routledge, Taylor and Francis, London and New York, and is expected to be out in July 2016. She is currently working on the theme of colonialism and religious changes in Assam in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries with special focus on the shrine of Kamakhya in north Gauhati.
