This lecture explores notions of missionary espionage in North Korea and the Middle East. Focusing on recent cases of missionaries who have been held hostage, at times for ransom, it delves into the fractured frontiers of Evangelical expansion in “limited-access” societies. Ultimately, it aims to address unwieldy convergences between the Cold War’s rise of international social science on the one hand, and colonialism’s legacy of missionary capitalism on the other.
