The nature of public life and its particular blends of cultures, as ways of life and forms of aesthetic expression, are defining elements that differentiate cities and give each one its distinctive atmosphere. Yet publics and cultures, deeply entwined as I would argue they are, have complex, sometimes conflictual, relationships that define the politics of the urban.
