Dr. Aryan Karimi, University of British Columbia, Vancouver

Curriculum Vitae

Aryan Karimi was an Alexander von Humboldt Postdoctoral Fellow at the MPI MMG. He held a Banting Postdoctoral Fellow at the Department of Sociology, UBC, Canada. He is an affiliate researcher with the UBC Migration Research Excellence Cluster. Dr. Karimi is a qualitative researcher who studies refugee integration and migration policy, with a focus on how integration practices inform but also challenge group boundaries between ethnic and racial minorities and majorities. He has conducted several research projects with immigrants in Canada and in Western Europe. His work pays particular attention to pre-migration experience, to post-migration practice, and to the broader national and global contexts. Building on his experiences of conducting qualitative sociological research with refugees in Canada, where he examined the integration experiences of ethnic and racial refugee minorities, he is now looking at the other side of the integration processes by exploring the viewpoints of majority groups. Dr. Karimi’s current research considers private refugee sponsorship by Canadian and German citizens. This project aims to understand the dynamics of newcomer inclusion from a majority group point of view and the extent to which sponsorship leads to long-term bonding and group boundary crossing with refugees. Dr. Karimi’s scientific publications appear in peer-reviewed journals such as Ethnic and Racial Studies, Migration Studies, International Migration,Sociological Inquiry, and Punishment & Society.
