Dr. James G. Johnson

Curriculum Vitae

James (Jay) G. Johnson is a current Joint Postdoctoral Fellow, Department of Sociology, Faculty of Arts & Science, University of Toronto, and the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity (MPI-MMG).  He received his PhD from the Department of Sociology at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). His dissertation analyzed the intersection of urban law and politics and state institutions concerning refugees and asylum seekers in South African cities.  In addition to working on various dissertation-related publications, including work published in the Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies, Jay is developing a book project looking at the relationship between urban spaces and state institutions concerning refugee and asylum seeker governance in broader comparative perspective. He previously received an MA in Forced Migration Studies from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg; an MSc in Global Politics from the London School of Economics; and a BA in Peace and Conflict Studies from the University of California, Berkeley, and was a research fellow with the Academy for African Urban Diversity (AAUD).
