Prof. Dr. Thijl Sunier

Thijl Sunier was a guest in 2024. Thijl is professor (em.) of cultural anthropology of religion at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, chair ‘Islam in European Societies’. He has conducted research on Islamic authority, religious critique, religious organisation, leadership, and knowledge production in Europe, and on Islam and digitisation. From 2018 until 2023 he was involved in a European (EU funded) research project ‘Mediating Islam in the Digital Age’ (MIDA). He has conducted several commissioned policy research projects and he wrote books and brochures on Islam for a broad audience. Until July 2024, he was chairman of the board of the Netherlands Inter-University School for Islamic Studies (NISIS). Currently he is executive editor of the Journal of Muslims in Europe (JOME/Brill).
