Stella Wolter

Curriculum Vitae

Stella Wolter is a PhD Fellow in 2025.  She has an interdisciplinary academic background in anthropology and political science. In her dissertation entitled ”Intersectional Perspectives on the Integration of Migrant Children in Austria”, she examines how the integration process of migrant children in Austrian schools is relationally shaped by social structural factors that produce their intersectional social positions. The thesis aims to understand the different social positions of migrant children by also exploring the production and maintenance of structures of inequality that shape their integration. It also investigates how migrant children themselves contribute to the (re)production and shaping of these structures of inequality–thereby emphasizing their agency.

She previously worked as a prae-doc at the University of Vienna’s Department of Political Science, where she contributed to the EU-H2020 project “Migrant Children and Communities in a Transforming Europe (MiCREATE)” and applied a child-centered methodology to study migrant children's experiences in various schools across Vienna. Additionally, Stella has taught courses at the University of Vienna on qualitative research methods, with a special focus on conducting research with vulnerable groups.

Stella has published on topics including migration, asylum, integration, intersectionality, and belonging. Among her forthcoming works are three co-authored book chapters: “Navigating the ‘In-Between’: Immigrant Children’s School Integration in Vienna” (Palgrave Macmillan), “Intersectional Perspective on Migrant Children’s Integration in Austrian Schools” (Oxford University Press) and “Why Intersectionality is Crucial for Understanding the Integration of Migrant Pupils” (Mandelbaum Verlag).
