Monika Palmberger is now Project Leader at the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology, University of Vienna.

Monika Palmberger was a research fellow at the Department of Socio-Cultural Diversity between 2008 and 2014. She obtained a PhD in social anthropology from the University of Oxford with a thesis entitled "How Generations Remember. An Ethnographic Study of Post-War Mostar". For her MA in social anthropology (with a minor in political science, history and sociology) she studied at Georgetown University, the University of Copenhagen and the University of Vienna, from which she graduated in 2003. She gained teaching experience at the University of Vienna and at the University of Göttingen and has been engaged in field research in Bosnia and Herzegovina since 2002. In her post-doc period at the MPI-MMG (2011-2014) she worked on a research project on older migrants in Vienna.

Research Interests:

  • (collective) memory in post-war context (Bosnia-Herzegovina)
  • ethnicity, nationalism and postsocialism in Southeastern Europe
  • ageing and migration (Vienna)
  • memory and migration/transnational memories
  • generation and lifecourse
  • qualitative methods, qualitative comparison
