Dr. Rosalyn Negrón

Rosalyn Negrón is a socio-cultural / urban anthropologist and Assistant Professor at the University of Massachusetts, Boston. She received her PhD in Anthropology from the University of Florida in 2007. Prior to moving to Boston, she conducted research in New York City on language and ethnic flexibility among first and second-generation Latino immigrants. The results of this ethnographic research are described in her book, Ethnic Identification among Urban Latinos: Language and Flexibility. With applications to health, communication, and immigration policy, among others, her research interests are varied. Broadly, Rosalyn’s work deals with the social interactional dimensions of ethnicity in diverse cities. On the one hand, she studies the micro-processes of interaction that move people through their everyday life and the ways that ethnicity becomes part of daily practice. On the other, she is interested in how these daily negotiations of ethnicity take place in and shape people’s social networks. Her work bridges multiple substantive and methodological areas, including social network analysis, health disparities research, and ethnic and racial minority STEM participation. She has conducted research in Jamaica, Florida, New York City, and Boston. Rosalyn’s research has been funded by the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, and the Ford Foundation.
