PD Dr. Gertrud Hüwelmeier (Humboldt University Berlin)

Gertrud Hüwelmeier is a Senior Lecturer (habilitation) and a Research Fellow at Humboldt University Berlin.  She is a social anthropologist whose main interest lies in migration, religion, and gender issues. She has in recent years completed a research project on Catholic nuns as pioneers in forging and maintaining transnational ties, both in a historical and anthropological perspective. Extensive fieldwork was conducted in Europe, the US, and India. In the past years, she directed a research project on “Transnational Networks, religion and new Migration”, funded by the German Research Foundation. Her research focused on Pentecostalism in Vietnam and on transnational religious networks of Vietnamese migrants in Germany.

Her publications include “Traveling Spirits. Migrants, Markets and Mobilities (Routledge 2010 with Kristine Krause), and articles and book chapters on transnationalism, gender, religious and ethnic diversity ( “Spirits in the market place”, (2008), “Mediating the Apocalypse (2011); “Socialist Cosmopolitanism meets Global Pentecostalism”, in Ethnic and Racial Studies, 2011.)

Gertrud Hüwelmeier is teaching at Humboldt University Berlin. At MPI-MMG she was a visiting fellow at the department of religious diversity (Prof. Peter van der Veer) in 2009/2010, focusing on the religious lives of migrants from Vietnam after the fall of the Berlin Wall. In 2010/2011 she was a visitor at the Department of Socio-Cultural Diversity and is working with Prof. Steven Vertovec in the international working group on markets and diversity. She has developed a new research project on “postsocialist bazaars,” including transnational labor migration in ex-COMECON countries.
