Heritage and super-diversity: a study of muslim womens’ identity in Cape Town (completed)
Rosabelle Boswell (Rhodes University)
This project investigated aspects of Muslim identity and super-diversity in the Western Cape. This research examined how Muslims maintain intangible cultural heritage (ICH) in the post-apartheid city as well as their interactions with a globalised Muslim diaspora in reframing identity. Do these interactions refresh local ICH or challenge it? The project investigated present streams of representation in South Africa and explored the influence of the current phase of Western globalisation on Muslim identity in a particular diaspora.
