The boundaries of citizenship within the European Union
Martijn van den Brink
The most prominent contributors to the debate on EU citizenship have been legal scholars. This project seeks to cross the legal boundaries and connect existing discussions with different fields, in particular political theory. The focus will be on three dimensions of the EU citizenship debate. First, I will work on the connection between national and EU citizenship and examine to what extent the current primacy of nationality is desirable in light of current challenges to EU citizenship. Second, the project connects the legal literature on social citizenship within the EU with the theoretical debate on global justice. Finally, I will engage with debate on the political dimension of EU citizenship and political legitimacy more broadly.
