Being and Becoming Black – self-(re)presentation and embodiment and the (hidden) diversity of African migrants and refugees in German cities

Johanna M. Lukate

In her project, Johanna looks at the biographies of African migrants and refugees to examine the processes and circumstances that lead to them taking on, or possibly resisting, an identity as Black. In tracing the diversity of African migrants and refugees in German cities, her project centers the heterogeneity of Blackness to ask critical questions about  how this diversity shapes the identities and experiences of people in the African diaspora and what it means for our theorising of Blackness in particular and, more broadly, socio-cultural diversity.
