Prof. Dr. Alexander-Kenneth Nagel

Curriculum Vitae

Alexander-Kenneth Nagel is a guest in 2024. He is Professor for the Social Scientific Study of Religion at the University of Göttingen since 2015. He graduated from the University of Bremen with MAs in Religious Studies (2004) and Sociology (2005) and was awarded a PhD (Dr. rer. pol.) in 2008 with a doctoral dissertation on institutional dynamics in policy networks. From 2009 and 2015, he was assistant professor for the Social Scientific Study of Religion at the Centre for Religious Studies in Bochum.

His research interests are Immigration, religious pluralization and interreligious encounter in Germany as well as modern apocalypticism. He has led or participated in a number of international collaborative research projects, including a junior research group on the “Civic potentials of religious immigrant communities” (2009-2014), a DFG-SNF lead agency project on “Religious and Social Identity in Civil Society” (RESIC, 2018-2021) and a Horizon 2020 project on the “Multilevel Governance of Mass Migration in Europe and Beyond” (RESPOND, 2017-2021). In an ongoing project, he investigates the modalities and effects of immigration and religious pluralization in rural areas of Lower Saxony.

At the MPI-MMG he participates in the ORA Joint Research Project “Muslim-Jewish encounter, diversity & distance in urban Europe: Religion, culture and social model” (ENCOUNTERS).
