Democratization in Taiwan has been accompanied by the rise of identity politics. In the last two decades Taiwan has increasingly been polarized by the ethnicization of national politics. While it has been widely recognized that the reification of ethnic boundaries in such categories as Taiwanese and Mainlanders is the root of the problem, Taiwan society seems unable to find an alternative political space for multicultural politics. This paper explores such a paradox by looking at the politics of difference among groups in Taiwan and the problems arising from their struggle for political representation.
