The presentation reflects Alberto Gomes‘ interest in forms of long-standing coexistence, cultural syncretism and hybridity in Malaysia and Goa. A focus of the talk will be the concept of civility by which Gomes means the cultural resources and capital that communities mobilize to avoid conflict and hostility in contexts where violence is in the air. Conceptualizing civility involves several types, organic and imposed civility. These concepts will be illustrated by elaborating on the management of cultural difference in Malaysia and Goa.
