The nature of public life and its particular blends of cultures, as ways of life and forms of aesthetic ex­pression, are defining ele­ments that differentiate cities and give each one its distinctive atmosphere. Yet publics and cultures, deeply entwined as I would argue they are, have complex, sometimes conflictual, relationships that define the politics of the urban.
