Writing Workshop for invited authors of Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies Special Issue "Beyond Classification: Un/Making Categories in the Context of Migration"

The workshop is organised by Ulrike Bialas and Johanna M. Lukate, who are guest editing two special issues on the contestation of legal and social categories in the context of migration (for information on the first special issue on “Contested Categories in the Context of Migration” please see this blog post). The workshop features presentations of the planned contributions by invited authors to the special issue “Beyond classification: Un/doing categories in the context of migration”, which is due to be published in the Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies.

In focusing on the everyday negotiation of social categories, the contributions to this special issue recognise migration experiences as deeply personal and embodied, intricately intertwined with the ways individuals navigate, resist, and negotiate categorisations imposed upon them. This special issue therefore aims to move beyond surface-level categorisations to delve into the profound impact of lived experiences on migrants‘ identities and daily lives. By exploring how categories become embodied and the quiet moments of resistance that emerge, we can gain a richer understanding of the complexities of migration, its intersections with processes of racialisation and, ultimately, challenge the limitations of existing classifications.

Interested scholars are invited to join the workshop in person. To register for the workshop, please send an email with your name and affiliation to Dagmar Recke by Friday 3 May 2024 at: recke@mmg.mpg.de
