Helena Hof kam als Principial Investigator für ihr Forschungsprojekt Foreign entrepreneurs in Tokyo's and Singapore's knowledge-intensive start-up sector an die Abteilung für soziokulturelle Vielfalt des MPI-MMG. Das Projekt ist Teil des kollaborativen, vierfährigen Projekts „Qualifikation im Migrationsprozess ausländischer Fachkräfte in Asien“ (QuaMaFA), welches vom Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung finanziert wird. Helenas Forschungsinteressen liegen an der Schnittstelle von Mobilität und der Migration Hochqualifizierter, Ethnizität, Gender und Diversität in globalen Städten und im Arbeitsmarkt, sowie neuer Arbeitsweisen und Innovation, unter anderem in Startups. In ihrer Doktorarbeit und einem anschliessenden Postdoc an der Waseda Universität in Tokio untersuchte Helena die Wechselwirkungen von geografischer Mobilität, Karrieremobilität und sozialer Mobilität in den Migrationsverläufen junger Europäer in Tokio, Singapur und Sao Paulo. Helenas Hauptanstellung liegt am Institut für Asien- und Orientwissenschaften der Universität Zürich in der Schweiz. Sie ist ausserdem Gastforscherin am Institute of Asian Migrations an der Waseda Universität in Tokio und im Asian Migration cluster des Asia Research Institute der National University of Singapore, war Research Fellow am Center for Metropolitan Studies der Universität von Sao Paulo (USP), Brasilien, und engagiert sich als Redakteurin für Buchkritiken bei der akademischen Fachzeitschrift Transitions: Journal of Transient Migration.
