Patrice Ladwig studierte Ethnologie und Soziologie und promovierte an der University of Cambridge. Er arbeitete an der University of Bristol, am Max-Planck-Institut für Ethnologische Forschung und war Gastprofessor an der Universität Zürich und der Universität Hamburg. Seine Arbeitsschwerpunkte sind die Anthropologie des Buddhismus (Laos und Thailand), Todes- und Bestattungskulturen, Kolonialismus, die Beziehung von Religion und kommunistischen Bewegungen und allgemeine Gesellschaftstheorie. Am Max-Planck-Institut zur Erforschung multireligiöser und multiethnischer Gesellschaften war er First Principal Investigator in einem Projekt zum buddhistischen Recht, das von der Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation in Buddhist Studies gefördert wurde. Seit 2018 forscht er im Rahmen des Max Planck-Cambridge Centre for the Study of Ethics, Human Economy, and Social Change zu wirtschaftlicher Modernisierung, Religion und Ethik.
