Dr. Ulrike Bialas

Ulrike Bialas ist wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin in der Abteilung für soziokulturelle Vielfalt. Sie erforscht Kategorien und Kategorisierungsprozesse im Kontext internationaler Migration. Ihr ethnographisches Buchprojekt Forever 17: Coming of Age in the German Asylum System (https://press.uchicago.edu/ucp/books/book/chicago/F/bo208300969.html) untersucht die Rolle der rechtlichen und sozialen Kategorie des Alters im Leben junger Geflüchteter in Deutschland und wird im Dezember 2023 erscheinen. Zurzeit führt Ulrike eine Interview-Studie zur Komplexität von Entscheidungen rund um Migrationswege und Aufenthaltsstatus unter Migrant:innen aus Syrien durch.

Bevor sie an das Max-Planck-Institut zur Erforschung multireligiöser und multiethnischer Gesellschaften kam, hat sie an der Princeton University im Fach Soziologie promoviert (mit den Schwerpunkten Internationale Migration, Stadtsoziologie, und Wissenschafts- und Technikforschung) und an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin einen BA und MA in Sozialwissenschaften absolviert.
